15 Roberts, R. B., P. H. Abelson, D. B. Cowie, E. T. Bolton, and R. J. Britten, Carnegie Institution of Washington Publication 607, Washington, D. C. (1955). 16 The rather low values for threonine and lysine obtained with both labeled aspartic acids in Lemna probably are significant and may indicate a "channeling" of aspartic acid, i.e., a preferential utilization of aspartic acid for incorporation into protein rather than for conversion to threonine or lysine. It will be noted, though, that the labeling of the lysine and the threonine are approximately equal, and that with acetate-2-C'4, all three protein amino acids exhibit nearly the same specific activity. 17 Probable mechanisms underlying the various labeling patterns observed will be discussed elsewhere. 18 Steward, F. Rabson, and N. E. Tolbert, Physiologia plantarum, 11, 537 (1958). 21 Absence of such a steady-state condition may also account for the finding of P. Linko (Acta chem. scand., 12, 101 (1958)) that aspartic acid was the only labeled amino acid in the protein of excised leaves of Convallaria, following their exposure to C14-aspartic acid. 22 Fowden, L., and M. Insulin stimulation of amino acid uptake in rat diaphragm. Relationship to protein sythesis.

1. Puromycin dihydrochloride inhibited uptake of CYaminoisobutyric acid (AID), 1-aminocyclopentane-I-carboxylic acid, and a, y-diaminobutyric acid by intact diaphragm muscle from male rats weighing 60 to 90 g when the antibiotic was added to the system in vitro 120 and 180 min before the addition of the substrate. 2. In the absence of insulin, this inhibitory response was also produced by cyclo...

Incorporation of Arginine by Soluble Extracts of Ascites Tumor Cells and Regenerating Rat Liver1

Soluble amino acid incorporation systems from ascites tumor cells, as well as from regenerating rat liver, incorporated arginine into the protein fraction in the absence of ribosomes. This incorporation is dependent on transfer RNA, adenosine triphosphate, and adenosine triphosphate generator, but not on guanosine triphosphate or an amino acid mixture. The reaction is inhibited by puromycin and...

Inhibition of protein synthesis in cell-free systems by homocitrully lamino adenosine.

Homocitrullylamino adenosine inhibits the incorporation of Ii4Clamino acids into a hot acid-insoluble form in cell-free systems derived from Escherichia coli and rat liver. The concentration necessary for one-half maximal inhibition in the E. coli system is i.l. Io -4 M. Addition of the intact molecule is necessary for the maximum inhibition. The inhibition does not appear to involve the activa...

Glucocorticoid action on rat thymus cells. II. Interrelationships between ribonucleic acid and protein metabolism and between cortisol and substrate effects on these metabolic parameters in vitro.

In rat thymus cells incubated with carbohydrate substrate the steady state rate of incorporation of uridine into RNA generally parallels the rate of incorporation of amino acids into protein. In both instances glucose is required for continued maximal incorporation rates, a requirement that is only partially satisfied by other readily metabolized substrates such as pyruvate, lactate, or /3-hydr...
